Mulches are materials placed over the soil surface to maintain moisture and improve soil conditions. Mulching is one of the most beneficial things a home owner can do for the health of a PLANT. Mulch can reduce water loss from the soil, minimize weed competition, and improve soil structure. Properly applied, mulch can give landscapes a handsome, well-groomed appearance. Mulch must be applied properly; if it is too deep or if the wrong material is used, it can actually cause significant harm to trees and other landscape plants.
Benefits of Proper Mulching
How to Mulch
For best weed suppression in your landscape beds, apply mulch in early spring. For best results, remove any existing weeds before applying mulch. Mulches applied for winter protection should be laid down in early winter, once the soil has cooled but before it has frozen.
For trees and shrubs, spread mulch evenly to a depth of 2 to 3 inches. For trees and shrubs in beds, mulch the entire bed. For those in a lawn, mulch a wide ring (extending from 3 to 6 feet out from the trunk) around each plant. Never pile mulch against tree trunks. Pull mulch back away from the trunk about an inch or so. As organic mulches decompose, they may need to be replenished somewhat every year; but don't let mulch build up to depths greater than about 4 inches.
How Long Will The Beds Stay Clean?
Our mulch and bed clean up service consists of pulling, cutting and spraying all weeds and installing new mulch to a 3” depth. Please realize that cleaning the beds once is only a temporary fix. Weeds are always germinating and it is impossible to remove all the roots in our clay soils, so the beds may be weedy just a few weeks after they are cleaned.
If you would like us to control the weeds in the beds, please inquire about our bed weed control service.
Landscape Bed Weed Control
Nothing ruins the appearance of a flower bed or landscape bed quicker than unsightly weeds. Until now, you may have thought that hand pulling was the only option to keep out those pesky weeds. With Weed Control from Eco-Lawn the only thing you’ll see in your flower beds are…flowers!
Pre-Emergent Bed Treatment
The old adage “A good offense is the best defense” couldn’t be more true when trying to keep your beds weed free. Weeds are the inevitable enemy of your beds and will take over if nothing is done to stop them. A single weed may be capable of dropping thousands of seeds; fortunately technology has lent us a hand at battling weeds. An Eco-Lawn application of pre-emergent bed treatment and those pesky annual weeds will not emerge. As some weeds are perennials, post emergent treatment is needed to be weed free.
Post-Emergent Bed Treatment
Post-emergent bed treatment is used to kill weeds after they have germinated. To do this the weed must be actively growing.
Landscape Bed Weed Program
We guarantee no weeds with this Four Application Program. We begin in early spring with our Pre-Emergent Bed Treatment. Then every 6 weeks a Post-Emergent Treatment is sprayed (3 total). If weeds reappear, contact us and Eco-Lawn will re-spray at no additional charge.
Ground Covers
Ground covers can pose problems with this service. We cannot spray weeds found growing in ground covers without harming the ground cover. If you have ground cover in your beds, expect to pay more for this service.
